While I walked through Merano in Italy, I came across this sundial. I was impressed by how many elements and codes are compiled in this depiction. For example, you see the motto of Frederick III (A.E.I.O.U.) as well as a skull with an hourglass on top of it. [German]
This monument in Cividale del Friuli remembers Julius Caesar, who founded the city in 50 BC. Its founding name was Forum Iulli. The name of the area of modern Friuli originates from this ancient city name. [German]
While I waited for my connection train in Udine, a classic diesel rail car stopped nearby. It was one of the Class FS ALn 663. Fiat Ferroviaria built these cars in the years 1983 – 1993. The depicted rail car ran for the line Udine – Cividale del Friuli.
Lebenberg Castle (Castel Monteleone) is a 13th-century castle in Tscherms, a place in the region of Merano. During a guided tour, you experience a fully furnished castle with a Rococo-style hall of mirrors and a three-floor high chapel of the 14th century. [German]
On our way from the Oasi dei Quadris Bird Park to the Cjase Cocel Museum, we stopped at the Castello di Fagagna. Almost nothing remained of the castle from the 10th century, but the view of the landscape invited us to linger. [German]
The Canal Grande is the heart of the Borgo Teresiano district, commissioned by the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. The neoclassical building at the end of the canal is a Catholic Church (Sant’Antonio Nuovo). [German]

After lunch at a peaceful inner yard near the Duomo, I visited the iconic clock tower (Torre dell’Orologio) in Udine. The tower is part of the Loggia di San Giovanni at the Piazza della Libertà. It was built by Giovanni da Udine in 1527. You may also know this architect from his elaborated bird drawings.
Trauttmansdorff Castle did have famous guests. So stayed Empress Elisabeth “Sisi” of Austria here. What about me? I visited an exhibition about tourism inside the castle and enjoyed a large garden with exotic flowers. [German]
The ancient Roman city of Altinum was a settlement in the region of today’s Quarto d’Altino. During its flowering, it had over 20,000 inhabitants. After being destroyed by the Huns, the inhabitants fled to the small islands in the lagoon of later Venice. [German]
On 17 October 1797, France and Austria signed the Treaty of Campo Formio in this villa. This event ended the War of the First Coalition. Today, the estate houses a collection of antique carriages and an armoury. In addition, the villa is a popular venue. [German]
On my urban walk through Udine I come across this sundial. I like the modern style. Unfortunately I don’t know the meaning of Nulla Fluat Quin Doctura. It sounds like you should teach them, there is no flow. Which flow?
