Annenturm in Althofen

Althofen is considered one of the oldest still inhabited mountain settlements in Austria. Besides that, there are still remains from the former town fortification. For example, theĀ Annenturm. This tower saw its completion in 1307.

Annenturm in Althofen

During the reign of the Archbishops of Salzburg, Althofen saw a fortification of its town. The Annenturm is just one of several remains. Its name originates from a former owner, the German mezzo-soprano Anna Grobecker. The iconic roof is an addition from the year 1957.

I took this photo from another tower with the name Hornturm. From there, you have a fine view of the Annenturm and the landscape of Carinthia. Another sight worth a look at is the Auer von Welsbach Museum. It is dedicated to a successful inventor, who was considered the “Thomas Edison” of Austria.
