Giebichenstein Castle in Halle (Saale), Germany

Giebichenstein Castle (Burg Giebichenstein) is a member of the Romanesque Road (Straße der Romanik). It served as a royal residence of Otto I for many years. Today, parts of the castle house a campus of the Kunsthochschule Halle.

Upper Castle (Oberburg)

The Oberburg is a station on the southern route of the Romanesque Road. The ruins also form a branch of the City Museum Halle (PDF).

Lower Castle (Unterburg)

Contrary to the Oberburg, the Lower Castle consists of several complete buildings. Here, you will find a part of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle.

Giebichensteinbrücke

I took the photo above on a river cruise with the MS Händel II along the Saale River. You have this view after passing a bridge named Giebichensteinbrücke.

Don’t miss the oversized sculptures of a horse and a cow. Artist Gerhard Marcks, who worked at Burg Giebichenstein University for several years, created these bridge decorations.
