The Kaiser-Josef-Markt on Kaiser-Josef-Platz is the largest farmers’ market in Graz. As early as sunrise, local producers fill the square with freshly harvested apples, Styrian scarlet runner beans (Käferbohnen), pumpkin seed oil, breads, sausages, cakes, flowers, and seedlings.
The Kaiser-Josef-Markt
The market reflects not only the regional diversity and culinary richness of the Graz region. It also forms a lively meeting place near the town centre of the Styrian capital. So you find the Graz Opera House right next to the stalls selling apples with strange names like Schafnase (sheep nose).
The Kaiser-Josef-Platz
The original name of the spot was Holzmarktplatz (Wood Market Square). It was renamed in the 19th century in honour of Emperor Joseph II and his laws promoting religious tolerance. The Protestant church on the square – the Heilandskirche – is a result of his Patent of Toleration.
