The Hus Museum is situated at the Hus-Haus, which was supposed to be Jan Hus’ harbourage before he got arrested. During my stay in Constance, a historian told me this was wrong. Jan Hus did probably stay in another building. The Hus Museum is worth a visit anyway.
Stone of Hus in Constance
The stone of Hus (Hussenstein) marks the supposed spot where Jan Hus was burned at the stake on 6 July 1415. Though the black boulder was named after Hus it also reminds of another victim burned at the same spot: Jerome of Prague.
Imperia in Constance
The statue of Imperia stands at the port of Constance (Konstanz). It reminds of the Council of Constance in the years 1414-1418. [German]
Sculpture of a Reblaus in Gumpoldskirchen
This fun sculpture is placed next to a memorial plaque to the Austrian actor Hans Moser. Schulpture and plaque are located in Gumpoldskirchen, a centre of wineries south of Vienna. Besides his movies and plays Hans Moser became famous for singing a song about the ‘Reblaus’ (‘Pyhlloxera’).
‘1. Wiener Wasserleitungsweg’ in Wienerwald
A pretty special hiking trail in Austria is the 1. Wiener Wasserleitungsweg which leads along the water supply line from the mountains of Lower Austria down to Vienna. So one can learn about the sources of Vienna’s water just by following a path.
Blaudruckerei Koó
The Blaudruckerei Koó in Steinberg-Dörfl, established in 1921, is one of the last businesses in Europe using the traditional technique of Indigo handblock printing. Visitors of this company will learn about the machines, materials and patterns used in this technique.
Weingut Gager in Deutschkreutz
Following a guided tour through Weingut Gager, a winery in Deutschkreutz, I joined a tasting in the salesroom of the winery. After having several tastings in old vaults it was a pleasant variation to sit at a modern table in a stylish room.
Sundial at Klosterneuburg Abbey
Visitors find this sundial, dating back to 1570, at St Leopold’s Courtyard (Leopoldihof) of Klosterneuburg Abbey (Stift Klosterneuburg).
The Genussmeile
The Genussmeile festival takes place in the Thermenregion Wienerwald every fall. At that event south of Vienna, wine enthusiasts love to walk along a wining and dining trail right in the vineyards between Mödling and Bad Vöslau.
Parksteg in Payerbach
This footbridge in Payerbach, Parksteg, was built in 1903. It combines concrete and a railing in the Jugendstil style. I was especially impressed by the idea of creating the ornaments using cast concrete.
Madonnenschlössel in Bernstein
The Madonnenschlössel was built in 1923 by Mayor Georg Gyömörei. It was the residence of him and his wife, the sister of Count Almasy. Today, it serves as a budget-friendly accommodation for hikers and bikers and as a venue.
Kunsttischlerei Potzmann in Litzelsdorf
At the Kunsttischlerei (cabinet maker) Potzmann I got in touch with Mr. Franz Potzmann who is not only a restorer for furniture but also offers lessons in restoring furniture yourself. After a small interview in the garden of his house, where also his lessons take place on sunny days, I had the chance to polish a small box myself.
