Memento mori in Haus

Sundial at the winter museum in Haus, Austria

On a walk through the village of Haus, I came across this sundial with a thoughtful adage. It is written in old German: ‘Eyne von diesen wird auch die deyne seyn’.

This line means in English: One of these hours will be yours. The saying is a kind of memento mori reminding us everybody will die one day (hour).

The beauty of a memento mori is that it gives meaning to our lives. What happens when we understand that life is limited? We learn to appreciate our existence and start to enjoy each day.
