This astronomical clock was built in 1472 by Hans Düringer and is the only one of its kind still in working condition with its original clockwork. It stands in St. Mary’s church (Marienkirche), the biggest of three town churches in the Hanseatic city of Rostock.
In Rostock, there are a lot of colourful gabled houses to see. It’s great fun to walk through the streets and count the different gables one discovers. Even this gable of a newly built edifice next to the old town hall has something decorative to offer.
The city hall of Rostock, dating back to the 13th century, is an interesting mixture of Brick Gothic and Baroque architecture. The Baroque porch was built in front of the Gothic wall at the beginning of the 18th century.
St. Nicholas’ Church (Nikolaikirche) is the oldest of the three major parish churches in Stralsund. It was dedicated in 1279 to St. Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors. Inside the astronomical clock dating back to 14th century is worth a visit.
These sculptures on the river Gera in Erfurt represent Käpt’n Blaubär and Hein Blöd. Both were stars in a German children’s comedy television series. Käpt’n Blaubär (Captain Bluebear) also appeared in the educational children’s television series Die Sendung mit der Maus.
This fabulous breed of pigeons lives within the walls of Wartburg Castle in Eisenach. According to legend, this breed was part of the dowry Elisabeth of Hungary brought to the castle after her wedding with Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia.
This manhole cover near Friedenstein Castle (Schloss Friedenstein) in Gotha shows the coat of arms of Thuringia. The inscription promotes the foundation “Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten“. During the Christkindlesmarkt, Nuremberg’s traditional Christmas market, guests may ride on a 1939 reproduction of a nine-seater Berlin with two coupés from 1874. The stagecoach is supplied by the Museum for Communication, which is also worth a visit.
The youth hostel in Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is located in a part of the Imperial Castle complex high over the city. Though the rooms are pretty modern, there are also several atmospheric parts. Interesting detail: You can find huge QR codes all over the hostel telling you interesting details about the city of Nuremberg.
Strange downpipes seen at the Kunsthof in Dresden. This public art created by Annette Paul, Christoph Roßner and André Tempel produces a fun show during certain hours and rainfalls.
The German Hygiene Museum (Deutsches Hygiene-Museum) was founded in 1912 by Karl August Lingner, a Dresden businessman and manufacturer of hygiene products. Besides being a medical museum it conceives itself as a ‘forum for science, culture and society’.
The Old Exchange (Alte Handelsbörse) was built in the 17th century in the early baroque style as a representative building where merchants could meet. Today, the hall serves for musical and literary events, company presentations and conferences, festive receptions and private parties.
