New city hall of Ptuj

The New Town Hall of Ptuj was built in the years 1906 – 1908 to plans by architect Max Freiherr von Ferstel. Max Ferstel is the son of Heinrich Freiherr von Ferstel, who is known for numerous buildings in the style of historicism in Vienna.

Povoden Museum in Ptuj

The Povoden Museum is the oldest open-air lapidarium of Slovenia. It is named after Simon Povoden who collected antique monuments in the city’s tower base. The largest and most famous piece of this collection is the Orpheus’ monument, a 5 m high monument standing in front of the city tower.

Orpheus’ Monument in Ptuj

The Orpheus’ Monument is a Roman tombstone located in the centre of Ptuj. It is dedicated to Marcus Valerius Verus, the mayor and counsellor of the city in the 2nd century. The stone is part of the Povoden Museum which is an open-air lapidarium at the base of the city tower.


Reconstructions of Roman shields (scuta) seen at the rooms of the association POETOVIO LXIX which promotes the Roman heritage of Ptuj. Every August they organize a big Roman festival and re-enactment event in the city.

Church of St Peter and Paul in Ptuj

The Puh Bridge (Puhov Most) is named after Janez Puh, an inventor and mechanic who became famous for founding the Austrian Puch automobile plants. The bridge was created by Peter Gabrijelčič аnd Viktor Markelj and opened in 2007. It is an extradosed bridge which spans the Drava River in a bow.

Mithras Shrine III in Ptuj

Remains of a Mithras shrine inside a protecting building built in the style of an ancient Roman sanctuary. The shrine was erected in the sixtieth of the 3rd century by soldiers of the legion XIII Gemina.

Over the rooftops of Ptuj
