Close encounter with white donkeys in Burgenland, Austria

While cycling through the Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park, we met several White Baroque Donkeys. On that hot summer day we all enjoyed the shadow of a small forest.

The Austro-Hungarian White Baroque Donkeys

In Austria, this kind of donkey is called Österreichisch-Ungarischer Weißer Barockesel. During the period of the Baroque, the nobility preferred horses and donkeys with light furs. They were said to be “light bringers” and symbols of the good. Therefore a breed of donkeys with nearly white coats and blue eyes emerged in eastern Austria and Hungary.
