Compilation of Munich city arms

This mural at the old town hall tower displays a compilation of seals and coats of arms related to Munich. The dates tell when each emblem was in use. In most cases, you see a monk. The year 1818 shows a lion instead. [German]

Old Town Hall of Munich

The Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) was the domicile of the municipality until 1874. Today, it serves as a building for representative purposes for the city council in Munich.

Monk versus Child

Even though the figure in the city arms is considered a monk, people often call it “Kindl”. This literally means small child. If you are in Munich, you have a better view of this Munich Monk or “Münchner Kindl” on your foot. You find this part of the coat of arms of Munich on the manhole covers.
