There are many cities with preserved town walls. Modern cities surrounded by an equally well-preserved moat are rarer. A fine example of such a combination forms the city wall and moat of Friesach, a place in the Austrian state of Carinthia. [German]
Herrenchiemsee Palace (Schloss Herrenchiemsee) is located on an island on the largest lake of Bavaria named Chiemsee. The palace is also known as the New Palace (Neues Schloss) or Herrenworth Palace (Schloss Herrenwörth).
The double spiral staircase of Graz is an architectural element in the former town castle (Grazer Burg). It dates back to around 1500. That way, it is considered the second oldest spiral staircase of its kind.
It was a cold day when I took this photo of a frozen fountain on the grounds of the Würzburg Residence (Würzburger Residenz). The Baroque palace saw its completion in 1744. Today, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In 1999 a strange figurine appeared in the city of Salzburg. It had chosen a prominent place under the Cathedral Archway between Domplatz and Kapitelplatz: The sculpture “Pietá” by Czech painter and sculptor Anna Chromy. [German]
The Römerturm in Cologne is a watchtower dating back to the era of the Roman Empire. At this time, the town’s name was Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. A total of 19 towers protected the settlement. [German]
I took this photo at a meeting of classic cars hosted by the Military History Museum in Vienna. It shows a still-running automobile built by the Czech company Praga in 1914. A board told me the truck might have carried a floodlight of the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. [German]
This sculpture named Versunkener Riese (Sunken Giant) was created by the German sculptor Walter Sachs. The art piece is located on the Frauenplan, a square known for the nearby Goethe National Museum. [German]
Near St. Pölten Central Station, my eyes fell on a building with a remarkable facade. A snake swooped up towards a woman. I stood before the Haus Stöhr, also known as Olbrich house. [German]
Eberhard I (1445-1496) is considered the first Duke of Württemberg. He is also known as Eberhard im Bart (Eberhard the Bearded). This equestrian statue made of bronze stands in the courtyard of the Altes Schloss (Old Palace) in Stuttgart. [German]
I only wanted to photograph the Roman stone with the “mail coach” in Maria Saal. But then I came across this intriguing relief stone in the entrance area of the Maria Saal Cathedral. It represented the Capitoline Wolf with Romulus and Remus.
During a parade of historic locomotives in Fürth, this engine of the German Class 41 evoked my attention. Despite being built in 1940, the freight locomotive 41 360 seemed particularly juvenile and elegant to me.
