St. Nicholas’ Church (Nikolaikirche) is the oldest of the three major parish churches in Stralsund. It was dedicated in 1279 to St. Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors. Inside the astronomical clock dating back to 14th century is worth a visit.
These sculptures on the river Gera in Erfurt represent Käpt’n Blaubär and Hein Blöd. Both were stars in a German children’s comedy television series. Käpt’n Blaubär (Captain Bluebear) also appeared in the educational children’s television series Die Sendung mit der Maus.
This fabulous breed of pigeons lives within the walls of Wartburg Castle in Eisenach. According to legend, this breed was part of the dowry Elisabeth of Hungary brought to the castle after her wedding with Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia.
This manhole cover near Friedenstein Castle (Schloss Friedenstein) in Gotha shows the coat of arms of Thuringia. The inscription promotes the foundation “Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten“. The Renaissance restaurant in Visegrád is actually a modern restaurant decorated in a medieval-like style. While listening to a lute player, guests have a solid meal served in earthenware. Personally, I loved the red cabbage I had with the deer stew.
Puch bei Weiz is generally known as a centre of apple production in the Austrian state of Styria. A fascinating detail: This Roman tombstone shows a lady holding an apple. You find this piece immured next to the parish church of Puch.
This sundial is located at the former Neuberg Abbey in Neuberg an der Mürz. Even though Neuberg Abbey (Stift Neuberg) isn’t a Cistercian monastery any more it has retained its medieval character to a high degree.
The museum tells about the life and achievements of Carl Auer von Welsbach, who formed the Treibacher Chemische Werke GesmbH near this place. He is well known for the development of the metal filament light bulb and the gas mantle. He also discovered several rare earth elements.
An ÖBB 4746 ‘Cityjet’ is leaving the railway station of Bruck an der Mur heading to Graz. This train is a brand-new one. It started to operate in the Austrian rail network on December 13th, 2015.
I love the architecture of this footbridge I saw next to the railway station of Voitsberg. The bridge spans the railroad tracks between the Styrian places Graz and Köflach. The operator of this railroad is GKB Railways (Graz-Köflacher-Bahn und Busbetrieb).

This mural at a building in Windischgarsten shows some ancient Roman places along a local part of the Via Norica. During Roman times Windischgarsten was a stopping place (mansio) at this road named Gabromagus or Gabromagi.
